1997 was a cool year. I turned 13. At the very end of it, I got my first MacAddict, issue 16, an issue dedicated to games, which is the best topic for a 13 year old. To this day, I think Civilization II is the apex of gaming.
The issues of 1997 represent an ever-changing landscape for Apple. The NeXT acquisition occurs, Steve Jobs returns, but not quite as the iCEO, and still no G3 or iMac, and the Mac OS was growing from 7.6 to 8. But with the acquisition of NeXT, looking back we can see the future in Mac OS X way ahead of time. There are some fantastic articles, especially in issue 8 about Rhapsody.
MacAddict was developing pretty grand as a magazine. Even there are some snoozefest issues, like the one about, well, All About Fonts. Others, like the one covering how to hack your Mac in ResEdit, was pretty fantastic and has information that certainly deserves to be digitally preserved.
For example, issue 10 has an interview with Steve Wozniak- that’s a pretty big deal, even now. Again, almost 20 years later, there’s a lot of data to glean looking back and looking forward.
And of course, issue 16 is about games, computer maintenance, and other fantastical things. I work in IT now, and a lot of the things I do stem from lessons learned in this very issue. Good times. I hope you all enjoy these issues as much as I do, and look forward to 1998 with me!
